Learners must understand the basic principles of soil sampling and soil testing as the foundation of effective crop production. This module prepares learners to collect representative soil samples, apply correct sampling techniques, use appropriate tools, and interpret soil test results accurately. The knowledge gained here supports all practical and workplace components of the Mixed Crop Farm Assistant qualification.
Learners will be introduced to:
• Soil sampling principles
• Grid and zone sampling techniques
• Soil sampling procedures
• Required tools and equipment
• Soil test results and interpretation
This module requires active participation in discussions, demonstrations, and guided practice activities.
This module provides learners with essential theoretical knowledge on how to collect soil
samples correctly and interpret soil test results for informed crop management decisions.
Soil sampling is the foundation of soil fertility management, enabling farmers to understand
nutrient levels, soil structure, pH, organic matter, and potential problem areas.
Learners will explore:
• How to collect representative soil samples
• How to apply grid and zone sampling techniques
• How to use soil sampling tools correctly
• How to prepare, label, and store soil samples
• How to interpret laboratory soil test reports
• How soil test results guide fertiliser and lime recommendations
This knowledge ensures that learners can support sustainable crop production, improve yields, reduce input costs, and protect the environment through responsible soil management.
Upon successful completion of this module, learners will be able to:
• Explain the importance of soil sampling and soil testing, including how soil fertility, pH, nutrient levels, and soil structure influence crop performance.
• Apply grid sampling techniques, including grid layout, sampling frequency, sample size, and advantages of grid-based soil analysis.
• Apply zone sampling techniques, including identifying management zones, sampling patterns, sample size, and advantages of zone-based sampling.
• Describe and follow correct soil sampling procedures, including defining sampling areas, determining sampling depth, collecting sub-samples, mixing composite samples, and labelling.
• Identify and use the correct tools for soil sampling, such as soil augers, probes, spades, buckets, sample bags, GPS devices, and measuring tools.
• Interpret soil test results, including pH, macronutrients (N, P, K), secondary nutrients (Ca, Mg, S), micronutrients, organic matter, CEC, and salinity.
• Use soil test results to guide fertiliser and lime recommendations, based on crop requirements and soil conditions.
These outcomes align with the Internal Assessment Criteria (IAC0101, IAC0102, IAC0103) in the QCTO curriculum.
